Three Keys to Unlock the Leader in You

The myth that leaders are born, not made, needs to be busted once and for all. That is not to say that some people aren’t born with the gift of leadership. I am sure that some are. But some of the best leaders I have ever encountered are people who learned to lead, not necessarily those who were gifted innately. Leadership is simply influence. And influencing others is a skill that can be learned quite effectively, especially by those who have a passion bent on a specific purpose or pursuit.

Three keys are essential if you are to unlock your leadership potential.

They are simple keys, but necessary.

First of all, you have to know where you going.

A clear vision is imperative. After all, people who lead have others who follow. If you are leading only to be called a leader, you will likely not have followers for very long. There needs to be a compelling reason to follow the leaders in our world. So do you have a vision? That is the number one key. Vision. What is it? WHERE are you going?

Next, why are you going there?

What is your “why”…your purpose in going. Because leadership can get lonely, and people can walk away. So if you don’t have a compelling “why” then not only will your people not be compelled to follow, you won’t be compelled to continue moving forward when things get rough. Unless your WHY if driving you toward something that fuels you inwardly, outward circumstances can too easily derail you. Inward passion must drive you. What is your WHY?

And finally, how are you going to get there?

HOW will you lead? Will you lead others with honor? With integrity? Or is the goal more important than the people? Because if that is the case, you will likely lead with fear or manipulation…even if it is subconscious. So why not take the time to evaluate and be sure your motives are honest and full of integrity. After all, when you lead people by showing them honor, your leadership will influence much more than a specific path. It will influence a life.

So take a little bit of time and determine:

1) WHERE are you going? (Vision)
2) WHY are you going there? (Purpose)
3) HOW are you going to get there? (Honor)
