The Games People Play
I heard an old song last weekend that has been playing over and over in my mind ever since. Especially these lines:
Oh the games people play now
Every night and every day now
Never meaning what they say now
Never saying what they mean
While they wile away the hours
In their ivory towers
Til they’re covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine.
Every time those words play in my mind I think…Yikes!
First of all, what’s an ivory tower? I thought it was like a high-rise office building where executives spend their life on work. But no. (Although it could be.) It is actually a metaphorical place of escape where we go when we don’t want to show up in real life. For real problems. With real solutions.
Yikes again!
If you are affording yourself the luxury of wiling away hours in an ivory tower, that is an extremely expensive luxury. It can cost you your dreams and visions. Your impact in the world. The difference you are called to make.
Some lines later in that song say:
Look around, tell me what you see
What’s happening to you and me?
God grant me the serenity
To just remember who I am.
Some of us need to remember who we are again. We need to remember what God created us to do and be and the qualities he put inside us that are there to help us fulfill our life mission.
Who are you?
What are you called to do?
My hope is that you bust out of any ivory tower you may be in and start doing it.
What legacy will you leave? Let’s commit to leaving a meaningful one.
