A Fresh Perspective on Differences

I had an awesome experience last week.

Through an organization whose mission is to have people see each other as human again (instead of an enemy simply because of a different platform) I volunteered for a recorded one hour conversation with a woman from the northwest. So that’s the first difference. I am a Texan.

There were weightier differences, though. Because of a form everyone has to fill out when applying for a conversation, we have to rate where we are on a scale of 1-10 politically and spiritually. So I knew we stood far apart there. I knew we were very different on the scale we see in the media. And social media.

Believing our similarities are much more prominent than our differences, I jumped at the chance to volunteer, and was not disappointed.

Our hearts were aligned on so many levels including foster care, helping those in our communities that are in need, the gift of family, and the joy of travel and adventure.

I met a new friend and I don’t give a hoot who she is voting for!

And I got to thinking… what if we did this more? What if we initiated these conversations on our own? What if our communities began to prioritize what we all care about! Our similarities! Think of how much could change!

And then I got to thinking about my business. I train leaders on the Loud Is Not A Language® thought framework and it does the same thing! (No wonder I jumped at the chance to volunteer for this call!)

In business I help people get to know one another through understanding their strengths, how they are wired, what their motivators are, their why, and the stories that brought them to the conclusions where they have landed.

Focusing on one another in this way, conflict becomes constructive.

Innovation flourishes where there is curiosity. So I am just wondering…

Who in your life, in your business, or in your community might just have the missing pieces you need?

And who might need what you have to help them live a more vibrant story, as well?

I would LOVE to hear more about that!
